Fritz Food Pantry
On Wednesday evenings, a small rotating team of volunteers from Slow Food Madison and the Madison Caribbean Association join the staff of the Goodman Community Center to cook a hot, nutritious, delicious meal during the grocery pick-up time at the Fritz Food Pantry.
At 5pm, the volunteers look around the pantry shelves for produce and ingredients, whip-up a plan on the spot, and get to work. By 6:30, we serve a hot meal for 20-30. It’s a bit “iron chef,” a lot of fun, a great way to learn how to cook, and a great way to make new friends.
It’s just in the planning stages, but Slow Food Madison will help write a curriculum for nuts-n-bolts kitchen skills that eaters of all socioeconomic circumstances can use to make everyday meals more nutritious, delicious, sustainable, and fun to make. This curriculum will be shared initially with pantry clients at demos, classes, and workshops, and will be tweaked for the ingredients available to the pantry and appropriateness as we move forward.
Seed to Table preservation kitchen
Slow Food Madison plans to send advisors and passionate amateur experts to help with the pantry’s brand-new “Seed to Table” entrepreneurial and youth-mentoring program. The Seed to Table program aims to make and sell value-added products from the pantry’s stores, and other donated fresh produce from farms around Madison.
